Agents

  • In artificial intelligence, an agent is a computer program or system that is designed to perceive its environment, make decisions and take actions to achieve a specific goal or set of goals. The agent operates autonomously, meaning it is not directly controlled by a human operator.
  • An artificial intelligence (AI) agent is a software program that can interact with its environment, collect data, and use the data to perform self-determined tasks to meet predetermined goals.
  • Agents come in all types depending on their function and the industry in which they operate. In general, there are three types of agents: universal agents, general agents, and special agents.
  • The agent function is a mathematical function that maps a sequence of perceptions into action. The function is implemented as the agent program. The part of the agent taking an action is called an actuator.
  • In a nutshell, an AI agent uses its sensors to gather data, control systems to think through hypotheses and solutions, actuators to carry out actions in the real world, and a learning system to keep track of its progress and learn from mistakes.
